The End is Near!

So it is the end of spring break, and presentation week is upon us! I believe I'm presenting this Tuesday, and I'm confident that I'll be able to present well. Also, I managed to build my computer! I'm so excited that I could finally get it built, AND IT WORKS! As it turns out, none of the parts came damaged, broken, or non-functional. I got up this morning at around 11:00 and went straight to work on it. By about 12:30, it was finished. I hooked it up to my TV in the basement, and it just... worked. So I'm quite thankful for this lucky turn of events! The only real disappointment regarding the build is the fact that the wireless adapter is not functioning. It seems that it is not compatible with Linux (which I'm running because a copy of Windows 7 costs like $90) but it's not that big of a deal because there's really nothing that I need on this computer that I can't just copy onto a flash drive from another computer and drag onto it. So, all in all, everything's great! I have a new, tiny computer that works and has my presentation on it! Here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure:

P.S. - Good luck to everyone on finalizing their own projects, and also good luck to everyone on their presentations! I'm sincerely excited to see what everyone came up with! :)

  1. For successfully building a computer, you've earned 500 XP! Only 2,300 more until you level up into a Tech-Wizard.
So it only takes you about an hour and a half to build a computer once you have the parts, eh? How long would you estimate the entire process to take (picking parts to designing to building)?
I have to say, it'll be pretty darn cool to see you present from the computer that you built.
By the way, I find your slight pessimism adorable.

  2. Isaac, I just started following your blog and my knowledge of computers is minimal in comparison to yours but it is still evident that you have put in a lot of work. Your even willing to spend money for the project! Anyways, I am looking forward to your talk about the entire process.

  3. That is awesome that you finally finished your computer. Knowing you, I had complete confidence in your ability to build computer (and I am putting trust in you for the future), but being able to finish one so quickly and to have no hiccups is a feat that will be worth sharing and talking about at the Ted Talk and for quite a long time in your life. I wish you luck in finishing your Ted Talk and hope you have a great day.

  4. Dude. Aside from your project being totally awesome and innovative, let me tell you just how aesthetically amazing your blog is. Gigglerump Grotto is a fantastic name, although I would have preferred Narwhalicorn Knell. Anyway, this is a very good project that is undoubtedly helped by IVG's success. Did you use your money to get parts?

  5. Okay so I guess I'll just do a big Q&A session here.

I'll start with Ethan: First, the time it takes to complete a system is variable. Depending on what type of computer you're building, the configuration process can days days, weeks, or months. Then the building process traditionally takes anywhere from 1 hour (for tiny computers) to multiple days or weeks (for high quality, super high-budget, water cooled, multiple video-carded, super-awesome computers).

Owen: No, I used my father's money, but we are planning a way for me to pay him back at some point.
